What is CD (Compact Disc)?

A compact disk is a small rounded, flat, and portable data storage device that allows for storing audio, video, text, and any information in digital form. However, most of the credit for the invention of CD goes to American inventor James Russell. Because James Russell envisioned an alternative to vinyl albums for storing and playing audio recordings. James Russell was the first to file a patent in 1966 for a product that resembled a combination of laser, digital recording, and optical disc technology. After that, the patent was sold to Sony and Philips companies in 1980. And the first CD was produced on August 17, 1982, at the Philips factory in Germany.

  • (CD-ROM) Compact Disc Read Only Memory entered the market in 1985. A CD-ROM is a common and standard optical disc readable by any computer with a CD-ROM drive. And it follows Yellow Book standards.
  • (CD-R) Recordable Compact Disc, which has a write process option. It can be written once and read many times. CD-R is made of a special dye that reflects different colors when light falls on it. (CD-R) follows Orange Book standards.
  • (CD-RW) Compact Disc ReWritable. In this disc metallic alloy is used that reflects differently than a regular compact disc. In this disc, data can be erased and rewritten again and again and this Disc follows the Orange Book standard.
  • (VCD) Video Compact Disc, which was created in 1993. It followed the White Book standard. Video Compact Disc helps you to see a moving picture clearly on the screen.

The DVD market was also very good for a few years, after that in 2003 Blu-ray was introduced, and blu-ray came into the market as a replacement for DVD.
